Mentorship in Action: Building the Next Generation of Civil Construction Leaders

Mentorship plays a critical role in the civil construction industry, where the successful delivery of complex infrastructure projects relies not only on technical knowledge but also on real-world experience, communication, and leadership. Our 2025 mentorship program has 20 mentor-mentee assignments and has continued to accelerate career growth since the inception of the program. Mentorship is especially vital in our industry field and provides the following benefits:
Bridging the Experience Gap
The construction industry is hands-on, and experience driven. Our mentorship program accelerates the transfer of practical knowledge that isn’t taught in schools such as how to navigate field conditions, coordinate with subcontractors, interpret specifications, and manage risks.
Workforce Development & Retention
With many experienced professionals nearing retirement, mentorship is an essential strategy for preserving institutional knowledge and developing the next generation of skilled workers. It also enhances job satisfaction and retention, particularly among younger staff seeking growth and career advancement.
Our mentorship program is built on a two-way commitment: mentees are expected to be proactive, while mentors remain fully engaged in their development. We support this through weekly check-ins and by reviewing upcoming project work in advance. This approach gives mentees the opportunity to study specifications and project-specific requirements ahead of time, ensuring they are well-prepared when the work takes place and equipped with the necessary details to contribute effectively.
Promoting Quality
Mentors help build a strong culture of safety and quality by modeling best practices and teaching junior staff how to proactively identify and resolve field issues. Our 2025 mentorship program directly supports a key strategic initiative: improving the quality of our deliverables and the value we provide to clients.
As part of our internal quality process, every project is reviewed by an independent PE Services team to verify that all required documentation is complete, current, and properly organized. If any deficiencies are found, the mentor works with the mentee to address them. This process reinforces accountability and creates meaningful, real-world learning opportunities that directly improve project delivery.
Supporting Career Progression
Mentors help mentees navigate licensing requirements (like PE registration), project management responsibilities, and leadership roles—critical for long-term career growth. Through our mentorship program, we have developed a career progression program that helps our younger staff understand what it will take to grow professionally and take that next step in their career.
Our mentorship program is more than just knowledge transfer—it’s an investment in people, projects, and the future of civil construction. By bridging the experience gap, reinforcing quality, and supporting career progression, we are building a culture where learning never stops and growth is shared. The 2025 program is proof that when mentors and mentees commit to one another, the entire industry benefits.
